Glass carbon, also known as glassy carbon, is a non-crystalline carbon material made by slowly heating polyacrylonitrile resin or phenolic resin to a high temperature (up to 1800°C) in an inert atmosphere, resulting in a glassy, non-crystalline carbon. It is suitable as an electronic conductor for electrodes and is also widely used in table tennis blades.
Glass carbon electrodes have the advantages of good conductivity, high chemical stability, low thermal expansion coefficient, hardness, good airtightness, and a wide potential range (approximately -1 to 1V relative to a saturated calomel electrode). They can be manufactured in various shapes, including cylindrical and disc shapes. Using glassy carbon as a substrate, mercury film glassy carbon electrodes and chemically modified electrodes can also be made. They are increasingly used in electrochemical experiments and electroanalytical chemistry.

Electrode Characteristics: The glassy carbon electrode is a widely used working electrode. It is a superior inert electrode with good conductivity, high hardness, high finish, high atmospheric overpotential, wide polarization range, and chemical stability. It can be used directly as an inert electrode for anodic stripping, cathodic, and variable valence ion voltammetric determinations. It can also be used as a chemically modified electrode.
