Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LiCoO₂) is a widely used cathode material in lithium-ion batteries, especially in portable electronics. The electrolyte plays a crucial role in ion transport between the anode and cathode, directly influencing battery safety, cycle life, and energy density. Electrolytes for LCO systems typically consist of carbonate-based solvents (such as EC, DMC, EMC) combined with lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF₆), and may include functional additives to enhance high-temperature stability and suppress side reactions.
Due to its high energy density, the LCO system is widely used in mobile phones, laptops, and digital cameras. However, it has relatively poor thermal stability, making it suitable for applications where high energy density is prioritized over long cycle life or high power. The electrolyte must be compatible with its relatively high working voltage (around 3.7–4.2 V) and offer strong chemical compatibility.
