Nafion membranes are used to separate the anode and cathode compartments of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The thickness of this particular cation exchange membrane, Nafion N117, makes it suitable for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The thickness of Nafion 117 is 183 microns.
Chemours (formerly DuPont) Nafion 117 membranes are non-reinforced membranes based on a chemically stabilized acid (H+) form of perfluorosulfonic acid/PTFE copolymer. The physical properties of the chemically stabilized membrane remain unchanged, and the release of fluoride ions is greatly reduced compared to the non-stabilized polymer, a sign of improved chemical durability. Nafion PFSA membranes are widely used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The membranes act as separators and solid electrolytes in a variety of electrochemical cells that require the membrane to selectively transport cations across the cell junction. The polymer is chemically resistant and durable.
Application: Suitable for electrolyte membranes in fuel cells, vanadium batteries, electrolyzers, electrodialysis, and electrochemical sensors
