Nafion membranes are used to separate the anode and cathode compartments of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The thickness of this particular cation exchange membrane, Nafion NR211, makes it suitable for many hydrogen air/oxygen fuel cell applications. The thickness of Nafion NR211 is 25.4 microns (1 mil). The membrane is located between the backing membrane and the cover sheet.
Chemours (formerly DuPont) Nafion PFSA NR-211 membrane is based on a chemically stable acid (H+) form of perfluorosulfonic acid/PTFE copolymer that has much lower fluoride ion release than non-stabilized polymers – a sign of improved chemical durability. Nafion? PFSA membranes are widely used in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and water electrolyzers. The membrane acts as a separator and solid electrolyte in a variety of electrochemical cells that require the membrane to selectively transport cations across the cell junction. The polymer is chemically resistant and durable.
