Ternary cathode materials such as NCM811, NCM622, NCM523, NCM111, and NCA typically use organic carbonate-based electrolytes containing a lithium salt. The standard composition includes:
-
Solvent system: A mixture of EC (ethylene carbonate), EMC (ethyl methyl carbonate), and DMC (dimethyl carbonate), offering high dielectric constant and good ionic conductivity;
-
Lithium salt: LiPF₆ (lithium hexafluorophosphate), widely used as the lithium source;
-
Additives: VC (vinylene carbonate), FEC (fluoroethylene carbonate), phosphate esters, etc., to enhance interfacial stability, especially under high voltage operation.
Key Functions:
-
Maintain electrolyte oxidative stability at high voltages (>4.2V);
-
Suppress side reactions on high-Ni cathode surfaces;
-
Facilitate formation of stable SEI/CEI films;
-
Improve rate performance and cycling life;
-
Enhance thermal stability and overall battery safety.
